STROLLING THROUGH IMPERIA ....HISTORICAL CENTER -
TRADE ZONE
- ONEGLIA -
ZONE BEACH
Even though the capital of the province Liguria,
Imperia cannot be defined a true city but rather a grown sea town,
where it is possible to live your vacation without the chaos of the
large bathing centres. Moreover it is quite near the country border
and thus from the Côte d’Azur (in 45 min. you will be in Montecarlo)
and halfway between the most “active” citis of the Riviera (San Remo,
Diano Marina, Alassio, Andora, …..). In this way you can spend your
vacation alternating moments of tranquillity and “living on the edge”.
The
City of Imperia was founded in 1923 from the union of two very
different towns, in history, urban composition and prevalent
activities. Oneglia, “daugher” of the Savoia family, modern and
industrialized, home to one of the most important harbours of the
province, lies around the mouth of the Impero river. Porto Maurizio,
once “owned” by the Republic of Genoa, characterized by touristic and
bathing activity, gathered between the small harbour and the
historical center high up on the gentle hill.
Although fused since long ago, these two towns have kept their
differentiations almost inaltered though time.
Porto Maurizio has remained the most characteristic touristical centre
of the city.
